ICF created a VR serious game on Meta Quest that replaces existing pen-and-paper role-playing training scenarios. Learners can take the training at anytime and anywhere. Instead of a Game Master describing a hazardous scene, learners were inside of it. Using game-based ‘tutorial’ scaffolding, learners were guided through the scenarios through text and audio prompts via a user interface attached to their left wrist, that gave them step-by-step instructions on how to conduct the assessment. At no point during the experience were lost for what to do next.
Additionally, those with difficulties in imagining scenarios described by a game master were able to clearly see the environments in which the scenarios took place and react in more effective ways based on scenario conditions. Rather than be told where a downed powerline was located, they could see it and avoid it naturally. The client response to the training was very positive from the beginning. They liked the initial prototype so much that they asked to keep the demo headset to use while development was still in progress.
